The Picture of Mother's Day

All day today I've watched my Facebook feed fill with beautiful pictures of Mother's and their children.  The first few I saw made me a little sad.  Oh how I wish I could take a new Mother's Day picture with my mom today. But as the day progressed and more and more pictures filled the feed I was a bit inspired.  The frame with which I view Mother's Day is changing the older I get.

While yes I miss my mom terribly the level with which I miss her doesn't change based on the day of the year.  I don't miss her more today than I did yesterday and I will undoubtedly miss her just as much tomorrow.  This year what I've found myself realizing is that I'm surrounded by really great mothers!  While my own mom may not be here I'm fortunate to love and have been mothered in some way by lots of great moms!

Some of these mothers are the mom's of my classmates growing up.  They were the mom's that mended injuries that occurred at their homes, sat with me while I cried waiting for my mom to pick me up in the middle of the night because sleepovers were tough for me, cheered me on as I swam at swim meets, and celebrated when I actually graduated from high school.  Some of the mom's are my mom's friends.  It is a joy to me to see them now as grandparents.  To see them at their children's weddings, and to see them as my mom would be at their age.  That's a gift.

And then there are my friends that are moms!  Watching them parenting their own small children encourages me.  We will survive.  I look at my special need mama's and wonder if they realize how they mother me even though we are peers.  They are the ones I turn too on the worst days.  They are the ones that encourage me, laugh with me, cry with me.  They mother me and I in turn am a better mom because of it.

I'm blessed!  I have a wonderful mom in Heaven, I'm blessed with a great step mom and birth mom, and I'm fortunate to be surrounded by really awesome moms.  This year instead of viewing mother's day as a day to be sad I'm celebrating all of you.  Great moms really do mother everyone, not just their own children.  I'm so thankful to have been mothered by some of the best!
